Orlando
13th-16th November 7.30pm at our Studio Theatre, West Bridgford. Read more about Orlando.
This production of Sarah Ruhl's adapation of Virginia Woolf's novel Orlando is directed by Barbara Seymour who you'll remember brought Mother Courage to our stage, garnering much acclaim and awards last season.
Barbara is back with another bold and exciting production, featuring an ensemble cast led by Emily Martin (Euridyce, Death by Design) and a set designed by Ali Bakewell
Orlando is a noble 16th century boy of sixteen, longing and failing to pay homage to nature and life through the writing of a profound poem. His longing and failed attempts to write and find meaning to his life continue through to the 20th century by which time he has changed sex, been a lover of Queen Elizabeth I, travelled to Constantinople, driven a car and perhaps gathered enough experience to finally write his masterpiece
While the play inspects many important questions about the nature of relationships and gender roles, it does so with a sense of fun and a touch of comedy incorporating themes of feminism, gender, sexuality, respect and tenderness.
